Republic Day

Republic Day India shed the chains of the Imperial British Rule on August 15, 1947, but it did not become a modern democracy until January 26, 1950. We mark this day, the birth of modern India, with an extravagant parade led by India's armed forces and followed by displays by all the various states in India. It was on this day, 67 years ago, that the Drafting Committee, led by BR Ambedkar, enacted and brought into force the Constitution of India. It is the longest Constitution in the world and led to the establishment of the largest democracy in the world. Did you know that January 26, 1950 was also the day when our first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad was sworn into office? It was also the day that we adopted 'Jana Gana Mana' as our national anthem and Ashoka's lion as our national symbol.
